Regen Ulcer Care LLC has recently developed a novel treatment for bed sores in stages 1 and 2 that is safe, effective, and inexpensive. This treatment, called KeraStat® Bed Sore Therapy, utilizes a purified form of keratin, a protein found in human hair, skin and nails. The product was developed based upon findings from pre-clinical work with a keratin-based thermal and radiation burn treatment that is currently being evaluated by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, a governmental entity within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that is responsible for identifying products for Homeland Security to be stockpiled and available for use in the event of domestic terrorist attacks. These pre-clinical studies in swine showed that the keratin burn treatment decreased healing times, prevented scar formation, and closed wounds faster than current standards of care. Because this therapy provided an environment conducive to healing, we hypothesized that a dermatological cream formulation may provide an environment conducive to healing the symptoms associated with bed sores for the elderly population.
